Fresnillo plc, the world's #1 primary silver producer, extends the scope of its Pure Silver Initiative, developed with the Vancouver-based social enterprise Metals for Humanity, with the installation of hand-washing stations in 60 schools in the municipalities of Iztapalapa and Xochimilco.
The Pure Silver Initiative focuses on Goal #6 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals: "ensure access to water and sanitation for all."
Since its founding in 2016, the Pure Silver Initiative has introduced silver-based rainwater harvesting and water disinfection systems for vulnerable communities in Durango, Chihuahua, and Hidalgo, bringing clean drinking water to more than 3,500 people.
With the current project, “Clean Hands Against COVID-19,” the Pure Silver Initiative will provide access to hygiene facilities for approximately 28,000 children in communities in Mexico City, broadening its impact beyond mining and rural communities to now urban centres.
